2014 Week 5 In Fair Lawn

Fair Lawn Week 5

Week 5 gathered very qualified chess players; therefore games in all sections were interesting, intense and at times, unpredictable. In Section 1 Michael seemed to have ensured first place by beating in personal meeting the main competitor Sophie.  However, in penultimate round, Adam literally crushed the tournament’s leader and helped Sophie to catch up with Michael and tie for the first place. In Section 2, camp veteran Aaron competitively scored four wins in a row and finishing last round in a draw that secured a clear first place for him. Lifting off by 1.5 points from falling behind group of pursuers, Gavin took second place. Ricky won Section 3.

Best Students in Chess Groups:

Tanya’s Group – Sophie

Igor’s Group – Aaron

Genry’s Group – Megan

Like in the last week, only students from Tanya’s group competed for the Home Work prize. At this time, there were fewer assignments, but their level of difficulty was much higher.  Adam tackled them the best.(well stretched the week before).

This week we decided to complicate the task for the participants in Survival in a Simul Competition, and did not give them a day off, daily presenting one of strongest coaches. But, in spite of the challenge, three students - Sophie, Michael and Gavin - managed to extract points in an unequal struggle with the master and conquered the well-deserved rewards.

Ansh (Open), who worked diligently to achieve this goal, joined with Philip (U600) in Problem Solving Competition

The team with the lulling contenders' vigilance title: I Don’t Care’ (Michael, Ansh, Ilya and Monet) won in Team Tournament.

Jane won Best Chess Notation prize.

It was not easy for Jeffrey to work on equal terms in the same group with more experienced chess players, but he put his best foot forward in both in chess, and in sports program.  It’s no wonder he won Best Effort award.

Ilya won the Swag Walker Competition.

For the first time, two participants - Monet & Ricky received Healthy Lunch Prize this time. Guess, why?

Suran won Art Contest, Ansh won the best in Music

Sports programs this week were a success. Not only was the weather great, but more sports events of Master Camp coincided with ours, allowing athletes from Day Camp check out the "masters" on the soccer field. Well the ‘checking’ ended in plus score for Day camp, and ‘pro’ of Soccer - Philip was unanimously recognized as best player. Girls have once again ignored this fascinating event, concentrating their efforts on Dodgeball. The strongest among them was Sophie.  Michael excelled among the boys.

Three teams (each consisted of 5 students) competed in Relay Race this week. Ilya was a chief arbiter of the event. I must say that judging the Relay Race recently has become increasingly difficult: speeds of players increased, and at the same time, some of the participants, hurrying to finish quicker, overstep the rules. As a result, the fastest, most dexterous and disciplined team was: I Have No Idea, under leadership of Suran (+ Michael, Adam, Gavin and Alex).

By the way at the end of Week 5, Summer Day Camp overcame the equator! Congratulations to ALL!
