ICA Scholastic Chess Camp Teaneck Location Week 1 Report: Where’s My Phone?
Though there were not that many kids at our Teaneck location we did have tons of fun. The coaches for the week Slava, Solomon, Alex, and Mila provided the children with plenty of challenging chess instruction and lots of dodgeball entertainment.
In the chess tournament the kids were split into three sections and the winners were Mathew Fellini in section three, Brian Hong in section two (Brian showed great fighting spirit by coming back to win the second tie-break game against Lily Del Pilar despite losing the first), and Idan Glickman in section one (Idan beat Ben Mankowitz in a strange “Sniper opening” position despite missing a mate in two, and then defeated Ilan Katz in a quick tie-break smother mate French defense position.).
The winners for best student in each group were Lily Del Pilar in Slava’s group (Lily was the only one to fully memorize the Alekhine-Rodzinski game), Sunjay in Solomon’s group, Neil in Alex’s group, and Charli in Mila’s group.
Ilan was the winner in the problem solving competition and got the biggest problem-solving chess book we could find.
In the team competitions, old-school experience won out as Idan Glickman led both his relay races team (members: Idan, Sunjay, Brian, and Briana), and blitz/bughouse team (members: Idan, Jonathan, Briana) to total victory.
The winners for sports groups were Ilan in the oldest group, Lily in the middle group, and Jonathan in the youngest.
The winner for drawing was Briana, while healthy lunch was Aidan. The music winner was Daniel, while the best text message was from Idan (the message sent to Mila’s phone was “Hi Mila have you seen my phone I l think I left it at the school.”).
We also put sunglasses and a hat on Bob “the horse.”
