2012 ICA Summer Chess Camp Week SIX Fair Lawn Report

Return of Fair Lawn Day Camp to the main base could not change a curious trend:
Week 6 Tournament Results in all three sections surprisingly coincided with the results of the previous week - the winners of Section 2, 3 and 4 again showed 100% result. Moreover, representatives of one family: brothers, Josh and Matthew Lerman («Lerminators») in Section 2 and Section 3 excel!!! Josh scored 3 out of 3 in Section 2, and ‘Matusha’ - 5 of 5 in Section 3, each added about 50 points of rating points. Also, 5 out of 5 scored and Daniel H. in Section 4. This result gave Daniel the right to move up: the next week he will play in a higher section - with the ELO rating.
Tournament Results:
Section 2: 1.Joshua
Section 3: 1.Matthew, 2.Thomas, 3.Sophie
Section 4: 1.Daniel H., 2.Ilona, 3-4.Alexis, Philip

Despite the convincing victory in the tournament, Josh was not able to win “Best in Chess Groups” Competition in Tanya's Group. The struggle for leadership in this, highest of Day Camp, group was carried out until the last minute of the final session. Sophie, the youngest participant of the "race” , led for  the first three days, on Thursday Yisrael Moshe took over, but Friday’s powerful finishing spurt from Daniel K. , allowed him to win this sharpest competition. Jay won in Max’s group, Ilona in Ivette’s group, and Debra in Greg’s

Survival in a Simul Competition was held again on a new, more rigid for coaches, system. Again, there were plenty of kids who wanted to test their strength in the unequal struggle with the coaches. The results exceeded all expectations: first, Daniel H. survived for 79 moves, therefore winning the Unrated Section, then the six-year Matthew set a new record of survival - 100 moves (first place in the Under 900), and finally, Vidur, and after him Daniel K. managed to win a clean victory over coach, winning special prizes provided for it - a very rare for now achievement.
Especially active in the Problem Solving Competition this week were members of Unrated Section: every one of them tried their hand in the battle for first prize in this contest. As a result, the best among them became Ilona, who had demonstrated not only a good level of chess, but also the determination to achieve goals. Sophie worked better than anyone in Under 900 group and won 1st place. To determine the winner in the Open Section we had to resort to the ‘Tie-break problem’ between Josh and Yisrael Moshe. In the end the winner was the Yisrael Moshe, who was able to focus better when solving the decisive problem.
Camp’s newbie Vani worked very hard on the homework, which allowed her to overtake less responsible competitors in the struggle for Home Work Winner Prize. Accurate Ilona almost without a struggle won the prize Best Chess Notation. It was very difficult for Kai to fight on equal terms with the rated chess players, whose rating by far exceeded his, in Section 2 and Tanya's Group. Therefore he won Best Effort Prize
Team Championship won team with a ‘lucky’ - in the opinion of an experienced captain Thomas - called Dominating Diana's (Tom reveal his secret to us: according to his observations, the team with that name will always win this competition!) Team members: Thomas (captain), Sophie, Ilona, Jay.
I must say that this week, Tom was a successful captain: his team - Flying Super-Monkeys (coach Max) - was also the strongest in the Relay Race Competition. The winners: Thomas (c), Ilona, Josh L., Michael D., Vani, Isaac.

While in London, the fight for Olympic gold continues, we conducted another "small Olympics." The best in the Sport Groups are:
2000 and older – Ilona
2001 – Isaac
2002-2003 – Daniel K.
2003-2004 – Sophie
2004-2006 – Matthew

Josh L won the Dodge Ball player of the week award, Michael D won an additional prize for the younger participants.
Intense battles took place on the soccer field. When the smoke cleared, it turned out that Thomas won the prize of the best soccer player of the week, and Matthew won the best young player.
Robert won Healthy Lunch prize. Alexis was recognized as the most careful and accurate walker, and received a special prize Swag Walker.
As always two additional prizes were raffled among students who signed up for full day and were engaged in Music and Art classes. At the end of the week Yisrael Moshe received Music Award, and Josh L won Art Contest.

With the end of Week 6, Day Camp has taken another step towards the autumn, there are only three weeks left of FUN! The schedule for Fall is posted at website, please do not forget to look at it (this can be also done in Fair Lawn or Teaneck Day Camps) and choose the most convenient option for your kids, and register before August 20!
