2012 ICA Summer Chess Camp Week One Teaneck Report:
As promised we are underway with our camp at both of our locations (Teaneck, and Fair Lawn) and as guaranteed we are having lots of fun. From little Jordan standing over Slava’s lifeless body, to the invention of a Max Schwartz fan club, to James Belov running head first into a Karate striking pad, things are going swimmingly. The prizes are being awarded and the kids are being rewarded for all their hard work.
There were 18 kids at the Teaneck location and were divided into 5 study and sports groups run by coaches Slava, Max, Ivette, Frank, and David.
There were three tournament groups with Kaylie winning the younger unrated group, Yuito winning the older unrated group, and Emre winning the rated group, with Christian Lee second in that one.
The best students in each group were: Maya in David’s group, both Ariel, and Jordan in Ivette’s group (both were new students just starting out), Yuito in Max’s group, Dillon in Slava’s group, and Brian in Frank’s group.
The best problem solvers were Emre in the rated section, and Marin the unrated section.
Christian won the simul competition for finding a perpetual check draw against Max which was the first time anyone scored even a draw against coach Max in the history of the camp.
Charlie was given the prize for time management for using the most time to consider moves in her tournament games.
“The Losers” (captain: Idan, teammates Michael, Jude, Dillon, Kaylie) were the winners of the annual Friday blitz/bughouse competition.
The winners of the individual sports groups were: Michael in David’s sports, Kaylie in Ivette’s group, James in Max’s group, Alex in Slava’s group, and Idan in Frank’s group.
The winners of the relay race were “Piggies on the Seventh” who were coached by Max, with Idan as captain, and teammates German, Kaylie, Brian, and James.
Yuito won for dodgeball, Michael won for Soccer, while German had the healthiest lunch, and Jude won for Art.
Finally, Nick Belov was voted the winner of the comedy competition.
