2008 ICA Chess Camp Week 4 Report (7/21 – 7/25)

2008 ICA Chess Camp Week 4 Report (7/21 – 7/25):

The week proved to be the most successful (so far!) Majority of the kids either were ICA students, or attended the previous week, or attended ICA Summer Camp 2007, and therefore everyone pretty much knew what our routine is all about. We were also very lucky with weather in spite of Wednesday night storm; we were able to complete sport program in full.

Main tournament consisted this week of four sections.

Open section gathered so far the strongest crowd: with highest rated Eyal Koren (1622) and lowest rated Kiernan Mc Vay (1156).  Our junior Instructor, Genry Krichevsky (who played ‘role of student’ this week) was able to beat everyone, but Eyal and got 1st place with 5 out of 6 points. Second (1/2 a point behind) was David Shekhtman and 3rd with 3 points Eyal Koren

Yehuda Koslowe easily won Section 2 (also USCF rated tournament) with 8.5 points out of 10, Alister Collins came 2nd with 6.5 points out of 10, and 3rd was Sebastian Spitz with 5.5 points out of 10. The winner of section two in week # 3 – Gelad Drillich was not in his best form this week, which is quite normal for young chess players.

Section 3 (un-rated event) was very even. Eric Kong and Alan Liu were leading until the last round were they draw  each other and let Connor Cabrera (who won his last game) get ahead of them by .5 point. Connor won section 3 with 7.5 points out of 10.

Section 4 (another un-rated even) was created for young chess players who had just started playing, to give them a chance to play real tournament games, and at the same time have a chance to win a trophy! Gary Braudo who was leading for the duration of the tournament lost (in winning position!) on the last day to Zachary Mankowitz. As a result, Zachary Mankowitz and Lilla Cabrera tied for 1st & 2nd places and received real chess trophies! Even though Gary got unlucky in his last game, he showed a lot of improvement in his games in this tournament. Also a lot of progress showed Bertina Kudrin and Michelle Musheyev, both were able to win couple of games in this tournament (maybe 1st time ever delivering CHECKMATE).

Blitz tournament was also organized in four sections. Each tournament consisted in 5 rounds

Genry Krichevsky and Eyal Koren  scored 4 points each and tied for 1st place in main section (ten participants)

In section 2 (six participants) nobody could stop Eric Kong who scored perfect 5 out of 5 points and got 1st place!

In section 3 (six participants) Ella Collins won 4 out of 5 games and got 1st place.

Liyan Cheung won section 4 (six participants). Liyan won all his games! This is a second week when Liyan is winning blitz tournament!
